Land use & Resourse use

Land use and patterns of resource use are important factors in watershed management. For example, if land is in public ownership, habitat restoration efforts may require different planning and implementation processes than efforts on private lands. As discussed in the Limiting Factors section, adjacent land uses can have important effects – both beneficial and detrimental – on salmonid habitat. In the early 21st century, land uses in the Russian River watershed include urban and suburban development to support a burgeoning population and a growing economy, preservation of parks and open space, in addition to vineyard development and other agricultural activities. Resource uses include water diversions to supply potable water to area residents, timber harvest, gravel extraction, and recreational activities such as fishing. Knowing that the watershed’s resources are finite, government agencies, landowners, and the public are working together to protect and enhance natural resources within the Russian River watershed.
