Legislation and Policy
In 2004, legislation and policy play an important role in
watershed restoration. The federal Clean
Water Act and Endangered Species Act have been important stimuli for local restoration
projects that affect impaired water bodies or imperiled species throughout the
nation. Throughout the western U.S.,
water scarcity has resulted in challenges to water rights and policy decisions
that divide communities.
Legislation and policy is constantly changing in response
to the state of our natural resources and society’s perceived needs and desires.
Recognizing the importance of the political aspect of watershed restoration
is necessary for developing individual projects that integrate with the ecological,
social, and economic character of an area.
In addition to many other benefits, the Russian River watershed provides rich agricultural lands, recreational opportunities, and scenic beauty.
