Originator:
The original Sonoma county soils layer was developed as a coverage named dfglands by by Colin Brooks of IHRMP in Hopland, CA and Rich Hunter of SEC in Glen Ellen, CA (completed the Sonoma Creek Watershed portion). Rr_sonsoils.shp was created by Circuit Rider Productions, Inc. Polygon features from the original source data were selected based on their spatial location within the extent of the Russian River basin. This metadata file incorporates information that is specific to this layer as well as information that is available in the original metadata file for the Sonoma county soils layer (sonsoils_u83.htm). The portions of this metadata file that borrow text from sonsoils_u83.htm are indicated in quotation marks.

Description:
Abstract: "Soils of Sonoma County.  SEC built upon the IHRMP Soils coverage to complete the soils coverage for all of Sonoma Creek Watershed. The IHRMP coverage had digitized about 50% of the area in Sonoma Creek Watershed. "
Purpose:
"To display soils data for the main grape-growing regions of Sonoma County, including the entire Sonoma Creek Watershed."

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
The polygon attribute data (the soil series code from the soil survey book) should be identical to the original soil survey. Attributes were compared to each soil map sheet for errors.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
These data are believed to be logically consistent. Data were checked for errors such as dangling arcs and multiple labels.
Completeness_Report: These data are complete for about 55% of Sonoma County, including the entire Sonoma Creek Watershed.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
The data closely match the original source data, 1:20,000 soil series mapped to non-orthorectified aerial photographs. Some polygons and polygons boundaries are probably very divergent from their true position, but this reflects the source data. In addition, our testing showed the Y map tics on the map sheets to have been printed about 1/8" too far north. These were repositioned on all map sheets for more accurate georeferencing. As the 1/8" move is an approximation, the effect on horizontal accuracy is unknown. For the Sonoma Valley portion of the original larger work (Soils of Sonoma County), horizontal position was consistently inaccurate. The features did not correspond well to orthorectified aerial photos (1993 USGS DOQQ) even at smaller viewing scales. Because the shift appeared nearly consistent throughout the Sonoma Valley portion, all polygons in this portion were moved using XYshift to more closely reference the features in the context of the DOQQs and other data derived from these. New polygons were digitized using heads-up methods from the non-orthorectified images in the Soil Survey document and edgematched to the shifted polygons. These data were visually assessed for horizontal accuracy by comparing vegetation patterns and other landmarks between the paper source maps and the DOQQs.

"Process_Description:
Except for map sheet 31, soil polygons were traced on to mylar overlays. These overlays were scanned at 400 dpi in 2 sections per map sheet (east & west). They were vectorized in Arc/Info, merged into a single file, and converted from digitizer coordinates into State Plane, California Zone II, NAD27 feet coordinates using the X, Y tics from the map sheets in the soil survey. They were then reprojected to UTM, Zone 10, NAD27 coordinates to be consistent with the rest of our GIS database. Vectors errors such as dangling arcs, unclosed polygons, or scanning artifacts were removed. Arcs were attributed with their source (digitizing, scanning, or on-screen digitizing) and polygons were attributed with their soils series code and a numeric equivalent created by the IHRMP North Coast GIS Lab. All map sheets were merged together into a single layer in Arc/Info. This single layer was projected into State Plane, California Zone II, NAD27 feet projections & Albers Equal Area, NAD27 meters projections so that a wider audience could use our data. An ArcView shapefile version of the UTM, NAD27 coverage was also created. For map sheet 31, data were digitized using a digitizing tablet.

For the Sonoma Valley portion, the set of polygons from the original work was moved using an XY shift. The distance values of the shift were calculated as an average discrepancy from several control points to more closely resemble the intended locations of the soil survey polygons in the context of the DOQQs. Map sheets for the remaining areas of Sonoma Creek watershed were scanned from the Soil Survey book and georeferenced in ArcView using 3-5 control points and ImageAnalyst. The polygons were digitized from the scans using heads-up methods in ArcView. The new polygons were edgematched in groups using ArcInfo and digitizing/edgematching errors were cleaned in ArcEdit before coverage topology was rebuilt. This work was done between March 2001 and February 2002. "
