Originator:
The coverage named CALGAPA was developed by The Teale Data Center (Steve Flatt 916-263-1499) based on the original California GAPAnalysis layer developed by UC Santa Barbara Biogeography Lab.Rr_calgapa.shp was created by Circuit Rider Productions, Inc. Rr_calgapa represents the portion of the GAP Analysis layer that describes the managed areas of the Russian River basin as it existed in August 1998. Polygon features from the original source data were selected based on their spatial location within the extent of the Russian River basin. This metadata file incorporates information that is specific to this layer as well as information that is available in the original metadata file for the GAP Analysis layer (calgapa.txt). The portions of this metadata file that borrow text from calgapa.txt are indicated in quotation marks.

Description:
Abstract: "Land ownership and management of California, distinguishing local, state,
and federal jurisdictions from private lands and delineating areas managed
for the long-term maintenance of natural ecological processes and
biodiversity. This layer therefore contains attributes both for ownership
and for the level of biodiversity protection."
Purpose:
The intended purpose of this layer is to provide land ownership information that could contribute to watershed planning and analysis
Supplemental Information:
"Process Description:

The ownership data were originally digitized by the Forest and Rangeland
Resources Assessment Program of the California Department of Forestry and
Fire Protection. It was then registered to the Public Land Survey coverage
at Teale Data Center so that coincident linework was common. Land owner
information was included as an attribute.

Managed areas were incorporated into this base coverage at UCSB. Some
boundaries were merged from existing digital coverages (see Source
Information above). Others were transcribed from paper maps onto USGS
1:100,000 scale topographic maps and digitized. Attributes were added for
the source of data, management status, and a 10 character Heritage Program
ID-code for managed areas. For further details, see:

"Source Information:

The ownership data were derived from the 1:100,000 scale Bureau of Land
Management Surface Management Status maps. The most recent national forest
maps and other sources were used to update the BLM maps prior to digitizing.
The managed area boundaries were compiled from many sources. Many larger
areas could be found on the USGS 1:100,000 scale topographic maps revised in
the 1980s. Fish and Game Ecological Reserves and Wildlife Areas and Nature
Conservancy Preserves were provided as digital files from the California
Department of Fish and Game's Heritage Program. ARC/INFO coverages of the
Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, BLM Areas of Critical
Environmental Concern and some other managed areas were obtained from the
responsible agency. USFS wilderness area boundaries were obtained from
published and unpublished Forest Service maps. The wilderness areas and park
designations in the California Desert Conservation Act of 1994 were obtained
from the 1991 digital GIS coverage prepared by the BLM state office. Various
paper maps were used to delineate state wildernesses and all other managed
areas.

INFO Filename: MA.PAT INFO Item: STATUS

STATUS DESCRIPTION

1 An area having permanent protection from
conversion of natural land cover and a
mandated management plan in operation to
maintain a natural state within which
disturbance events (of natural type,
frequency, and intensity) are allowed to
proceed without interference or are mimicked
through management. (Fire is usually
suppressed in most managed areas in
California, however).

2 An area having permanent protection from
conversion of natural land cover and a
mandated management plan in operation to
maintain a primarily natural state, but which
may receive use or management practices that
degrade the quality of existing natural
communities.

3 An area having permanent protection from
conversion of natural land cover for the
majority of the area, but subject to
extractive uses of either a broad,
low-intensity type or localized intense type.
It also confers protection to federally listed
endangered and threatened species throughout
the area.

4 Lack of irrevocable easement or mandate to
prevent conversion of natural habitat types to
anthropogenic habitat types and allow for
intensive use throughout the tract, or
existence of such restrictions is unknown.

INFO Filename: MA.PAT INFO Item: MACODE

This ten character code consists of 1 character for managing agency type, 2
characters for managing agency, 2 characters for managing agency unit type,
4 characters usually the first four letters of the managed area name, and 1
character tie-breaker. Thus the first 5 characters represent the MATYPE
described below. The codes were generally assigned by the California
Heritage Program, but supplemented at UCSB when codes were not previously
assigned, either for additional types or for new managed areas.

Note: although the Heritage Program uses a 14 character code, the last four
characters represent the state and nation abbreviations, which for this
coverage would always be CA and US respectively. If this coverage were to be
mosaicked with other states, these codes should be appended.
