"The extent of the farmland coverage corresponds to the availability of what the National Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) considers "modern soil surveys". Thus, coverage is so far limitied to 49 of California's 58 counties. Some of these 49 counties have only been partially mapped as the NRCS has limited its efforts to areas which are agriculturally important. The soil surveys rarely extend into National Forests. Beginning in 2006, SSURGO digital soil information became available and incorporated into the Mendocino County Important Farmland data. The land use minimum mapping unit of ten acres has not changed, but digital soil units of down to one acre occur in the SSURGO-enhanced Important Farmland data.
