This data layer represents Important Farmland in the Russian River watershed. Features from the original source data (see Originator information) were selected based on their spatial location within the Russian River watershed in Sonoma and Mendocino counties in California (the study area boundary of the Russian River Watershed Adaptive Management Plan project). This metadata file incorporates much of the information that was available in the metadata of the original source data. This information is indicated in quotation marks. "Established in 1982, Government Code Section 65570 mandates FMMP to biennially report on the conversion of farmland and grazing land, and to provide maps and data to local government and the public. "
This data layer was edited from its original source data set for inclusion in the Russian River Watershed Adaptive Management Plan (RRWAMP) and RRWAMP Baseline Watershed Assessment project. The intended use of this data layer in this project is to examine landscape or human factors to promote ecological health and sustainability within the Russian River watershed. " The Farmland Mapping and Monitoring Program (FMMP) provides data to decision makers for use in planning for the present and future use of California's agricultural land resources. The data is a current inventory of agricultural resources. This data is for general planning purposes and has a minimum mapping unit of ten acres. "

" This data does not reflect general plan or zoning designations, city limit lines, changing economic or market conditions, or other factors which may be taken into consideration when land use policies are determined. This data is not designed to be used for parcel specific planning purposes due to its scale and the size of the minimum mapping unit (10 acres). Data were checked for spatial/geographic logic and consistency. "The extent of the farmland coverage corresponds to the availability of what the National Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) considers "modern soil surveys". Thus, coverage is so far limitied to 49 of California's 58 counties. Some of these 49 counties have only been partially mapped as the NRCS has limited its efforts to areas which are agriculturally important. The soil surveys rarely extend into National Forests. Beginning in 2006, SSURGO digital soil information became available and incorporated into the Mendocino County Important Farmland data. The land use minimum mapping unit of ten acres has not changed, but digital soil units of down to one acre occur in the SSURGO-enhanced Important Farmland data. This data layer was created for the Russian River Watershed Adaptive Management Plan (RRWAMP) and RRWAMP Baseline Watershed Assessment project through minor editing to the original source data. Data were clipped to the project study area boundary (rr_watershed_bndy.shp) and projected using ESRI's ArcGIS GeoProcessing tools; and renamed to the current file name.
