Features from the original source data (see Originator information) were selected based on their spatial location within the Russian River watershed in Sonoma and Mendocino counties in California (the study area boundary of the Russian River Watershed Adaptive Management Plan project). This metadata file incorporates new information to the metadata of the original source data. This new information is indicated in quotation marks." The Fire Perimeters data consists of CDF fires 300 acres and greater in size and USFS fires 10 acres and greater throughout California from 1950 to 2002. Some fires before 1950, and some CDF fires smaller than 300 acres are also included. In 2002 CDF's criteria expanded to include timber fires 10 acres and greater, brush fires 50 acres and greater, and grass fires 300 acres and greater, wildland fires destroying three or more structures, and wildland fires causeing $300,000 or more in damage. Also in 2002 BLM and NPS joined the effort, collecting fires10 acres and greater. So far only Sequoia-Kings Canyon and Yosemite National Parks have turned in data from NPS, and BLM has only turned in 2002 fires.

Purpose:

To ensure high quality fire perimeters data are avialable to the public and to cooperating agencies. The Wildfire Activity Statistics Report is created annually by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. "This data layer was edited from its original source data set for inclusion in the Russian River Watershed Adaptive Management Plan (RRWAMP) and RRWAMP Baseline Watershed Assessment project. The intended use of this data layer in this project is to examine landscape or human factors to promote ecological health and sustainability within the Russian River watershed."

Supplemental_Information:

The fire history coverage was generated within the ArcInfo environment, and is a DOUBLE precision coverage. Two additional items were added to the original region subclass table: 'SOURCE' and 'FLAG'. SOURCE indicates whether or not a perimeter originates from the most recently submitted updates, or was maintained from the previous version of the statewide fire_history coverage. FLAG is used as a tag for any perimeters that could not be resolved, either within the original coverage or between the original and update perimeters. Regions tagged with 'Y' should be resolved by the responsible ranger or forest service unit. These items could be dropped with the 'dropitem' command once any conflicts have been resolved. Where incomplete attribute data prevented the creation of a complete incident number, missing fields were 'padded' out with zeros. For instance, a perimeter with a known year and agency, but without fire Incident# or Fire#, would appear as: CA1956KNF00000000000 Likewise, incomplete date fields were padded out as well. (ex. 19840000). In the case of duplicate submissions of the same fire perimeter by two seperate agencies, ownership was generally awarded to that agency indicated by the ICS. In some cases, attribute data from non-responsible agencies was used to complete the attributes of correct perimeters. ******************************************************************************* FIELD NAME: AGENCY AGENCY DESCRIPTION ------ ----------------------------------------------------- CDF California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection USFS United States Forest Service NPS National Park Service KRN Kern County LAC Los Angeles County MRN Marin County ORC Orange County SBC Santa Barbara County VNC Ventura County Note: The agency attribute in the fires subclass is currently populated with the agency who supplied that particular incident, in the case of a duplicate the most complete perimeter was used, however it was not always possible to determine who had primary responsibility of everyfire. Please contact RSL with updated information. The INCIDENT_NUMBER attribute: The incident_number is a unique identifier that combines state, year, agency id, incident number, and fire number. For example CA 1981 MVU 00 1126 00 461 | | | | | | | State| | | | | | | | | | | | Year | | | | | | | | | | ICS | | | | | | | | Pad | | | | | | Incident# | | | | Pad | | Fire# CA1981MVU00112600461 is a fire perimeter with a year of 1981, from the MVU (San Diego) rangerunit, incident number 1126, fire number 461. All missing or nonexistent data is "padded" with zeros. For example: CA1981CNF00000000019 is a 1981 fire from Cleveland NF with a USFS fire number 19. In the case of VMP fires, (Vegetation management projects) the contract number is used in place of the fire_num and is padded with zeros, and the cause is coded 15 (VMP) or coded 16 (Range Improvement) for range improvement burns. In some cases the fire contains an incident number and a contract number, in which case the incident number was used, to get the contract number you much check the CDF subclass.

Time_Period_of_Content:

Time_Period_Information:

Single_Date/Time:

Calendar_Date: 2003

Currentness_Reference:

publication date

Status:

Progress: In work

Maintenance_and_Update_Frequency: Annually

Spatial_Domain:

Bounding_Coordinates:

West_Bounding_Coordinate: -123.387487

East_Bounding_Coordinate: -122.529350

North_Bounding_Coordinate: 39.397711

South_Bounding_Coordinate: 38.325337

Keywords:

Theme:

Theme_Keyword_Thesaurus: California Environmental Resource Evaluation System (CERES)

Theme_Keyword: fire history, fire protection, firehistory, state responsibility areas

Theme_Keyword: watershed management

Place:

Place_Keyword: Russian River

Place_Keyword: Sonoma County

Place_Keyword: Mendocino County

Place_Keyword: California

Access_Constraints: None

Use_Constraints:

"The user assumes the entire risk related to the use of this data.
