Four biologists dragged a net through the Russian River near Jenner last week, scooping up flounders, sticklebacks, prickly sculpins and young steelhead trout.
Upstream at Monte Rio, another team with the Sonoma County Water Agency downloaded water temperature and oxygen readings from probes left in the river.
The 110-mile-long river is a massive ecosystem, home to more than 30 species of fish, including the imperiled coho and Chinook salmon and steelhead trout. It also is the backbone of a water supply that serves more than 600,000 people in Mendocino, Sonoma and Marin counties and sustains agriculture and tourism.
Hence, the problem.
